The Benefits of Play

Female campers playing on teeter totter

“Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning.” -Fred Rogers

As parents, we focus on providing our children with every possible investment for their success. One of the truly greatest gifts we can give our children is the time to play. In fact, the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights views play as so vitally important for children that it describes it as a right. Here at Banner, we are so proud to be able to provide each of our campers with time for authentic play in a physically and emotionally safe environment.

A summer spent at Banner gives campers the ability to engage with the people and the world around them each and every day. Through this engagement, campers’ brains develop, they learn social and emotional skills, practice making decisions and enjoy being creative. The opportunity to play, in addition, increases physical activity levels leading to healthier bodies. Play has also been shown to increase learning readiness. There really is no better investment than time to play.

While we countdown the days until summer 2021 when we can enjoy playing here at Banner once again, we wanted to share a fun Creative Creations activity for you to try at home. All you need is some water, dish soap, corn syrup and a straw to make some unpoppable bubbles – you can even make use of our colder weather and take them outside to freeze!
